The Alliance for Walking - more people walking more
"National targets should be set to double the number of journeys on foot in England's towns and cities"
The Annual Report of the Chief Medical Officer 2009
The aim of the Alliance for Walking is to provide a forum where organisations promoting, supporting and facilitating walking nationally can work together to raise the profile of walking and increase investment in schemes for walkers.
The need to promote and support walking and walkers
Walking is the only type of physical activity which has the potential to attract one-third of the population to increase their level of physical activity. The evidence base for walking is very strong and there is increasing recognition that walking is an activity with great benefits to populations and patients. However, investment in walking still lags far behind that in other types of activities which attract much smaller numbers of people.
Partners
There are a number of excellent bodies working across England supporting voluntary, health and local authority services that deliver the range of services which promote, facilitate and support walking and walkers.
